Description: Fabulous oil on canvas painting depicting a moose in a wilderness clearing by Carl Rungius copyright 1907. The painting is titled "Moose and Mate, 1907" which was written in pencil on the back of the original gilt frame in the hand of the artist. Image five shows the signature of Rugnius which matches the signature on the painting. Rungius paintings have sold upwards of $500,000 at auction. While this is not on the grand scale of those paintings, it is a beauty in its own right and is a good buy at this price level. This painting was offered in the May, 2006 Heritage Auction Galleries sale with an estimate of $50,000-70,000.

Carl Rungius (1869–1959)

Born and formally trained in Germany, Carl Rungius became one of the most noted painters of wildlife scenes in America. He often painted in plain air and his experience as a big game hunter augmented his understanding of wildlife subject matter. Influenced by the styles of German Romanticism and Realism as a student, Rungius arrived in New York in 1894 and made his first trip West in the following year. He was a member of the National Academy of Design in New York, but spent most of his career traveling throughout the West and Northwest, ultimately settling in Banff, Alberta. This painting, which is in excellent original condition, is characteristic of Rungius's depictions of big-game animals in impressive landscape settings.
