1858 50C PR66* NGC. Type One Reverse. On the Type One reverse the tops of LF nearly touch the claws are long and closed and the arrowheads are large. Waves of golden-brown ocean-blue and plum patina enrich this impressive Gem. This stunning superb coin will please the connoisseur. It ranks high in the census of this date, the third finest known. Like the other denominations, the mintage is unknown, but probably nearly the same as the smaller silver coins of this year, perhaps a couple hundred each. Total population data from third party grading services may provide a clue. It is believed that the 1858 proof half dollar is rarer than the other denominations, due to a lower mintage or a lower survival rate, probably the latter. The NGC Census Report shows the following totals for each denomination of proof 1858 silver coins: half dime (76), dime (64), quarter (60), half dollar (46), silver dollar (67). Immediately evident is the substantially lower total for the half dollar. Carefully made dies show few identifying characteristics. Light cameo contrast on nicely toned mirrors. Census: 2 finer, An NGC Proof 67 sold on 08/07 for $54,625 (8/08).
